5 KIRSTINE & MIKKEL MADSEN

Kirstine was born 13 August 1874 at Nordestgaard, Tim, the fifth child of Jens Christian and Else Kirstine Graversen. Died 20 May 1933 in Sønder Omme. Married 20 April 1900 in Tim Church, Mikkel Madsen, born 17 November 1867 in Assing, son of Mette Mikkelsen and Ib Madsen, Velling in Assing parish. Mikkel died 21 May 1924 in Sønder Omme. Kirstine and Mikkel are pictured at right at their wedding, 20-4-1900.

Mikkel was, at the time of the marriage, a farm owner in Vorgod Østerby, but in 1918 he sold the farm and instead bought "Lille Kærgaard", which he and Kirstine ran until 1924, when their daughter Mette and son-in-law Søren took over the running and ownership. Kirstine and Mikkel then moved to Sønder Omme. Kirstine and Mikkel were both buried in the churchyard in Sønder Omme. 8 children:

Jenny tells about life at home and memories of her parents:

I do not have many memories from Vorgod. We moved to Sønder Omme in March 1918; we travelled there by train. The railway was built in 1917, so it was quite an event.
Father brought the household goods here by horse-drawn wagon, and after arriving in Sønder Omme we had coffee at Jørge Vestergaard's. We then walked to Lille Kærgaard, a farm of about 70 tønder land.
There was electric light; that was not common everywhere at that time, so we did not need matches, although we still had to go to the neighbour to borrow some in order to light the stove. I remember that the two youngest siblings, and Kristian, lay under the kitchen table in their coats and slept.
In 1919 the country was ravaged by the Spanish flu. We were ill, except for me, and I thought they all had it good, for they could lie in bed, whereas I, who had nothing wrong with me, had to look after them all. I remember that Marie Vestergaard came with a large pot full of sweet soup.
In 1924 the farm was sold to sister Mette and her husband Søren, because of Father's illness, after which they bought a house in Sønder Omme. Father died there in 1924.
We had a really good home; there was no abundance, but we never felt that anything was lacking. I was at home to look after Mother from 1 February 1933 until she died 20 May 1933.

5.1 METTE MADSEN

Mette was born 22 December 1900 in Vorgod. Died 23 July 1984 in Herning. Married 12 March 1924 in Sønder Omme Church Søren Peter Sørensen, born 12 November 1889, the son of Madsine Kristine and Kristian Peter Sørensen, Tarm. Søren died 15 April 1933 at the state hospital in Sønderborg.
At the time of the marriage, Mette and Søren took over "Lille Kærgaard" after Mette's parents. They ran the farm until 1933, but then moved to Sønder Omme, where Søren died shortly afterwards. He was buried in the churchyard in Sønder Omme. After Søren's death Mette established and ran a sewing business. 2 children:

5.1.2 Michael Sørensen

Mette married again 31 May 1942 to brick burner Kristen Kristensen Gejl, born 28 August 1887, the son of Maren and Iver Anton Kristensen Gejl, Sønder Omme. After only six years of marriage, Kristen died 19 November 1948 at Vejle Hospital.
After Kristen's death Mette remained in her house in Sønder Omme, but sold it in 1952 and took a position as housekeeper. In 1962 she moved to Herning, where for a number of years she lived in Danasvej and later in H.C. Ørstedsvej. Mette and Kristen were both buried in the churchyard in Sønder Omme.

5.1.1 Olga Sørensen

Olga was born 21 February 1925 in Sønder Omme. Died 6 April 2020 in Herning. Married 20 February 1949 in Sønder Omme Henrik Imanuel Høstmark Risom, born 18 September 1925, the son of Johanne and Henrik Høstmark Risom, Sønderborg. Henrik died 2 February 2015 in Herning. He was buried at Herning Nordre Cemetery.

Olga was trained as a draper's assistant in Sønder Omme. The training was later supplemented with business school and the extended folk high school, HUH in Haslev. Until her marriage Olga worked in Grenaa. Henrik was trained in the customs service, and later became district customs chief in Frederikshavn. Olga and Henrik are both buried at Nordre Cemetery (Skovkirkegården) in Herning. 3 children:

5.1.1.1 Birgit Høstmark Risom born 11 December 1949 in Grenaa. Married 20 October 1973 in Sct. Johannes Church in Herning to manager Jens Eriksen Maul, born 16 November 1948 in Vindum, the son of Else Marie and Jacob Tinus Eriksen Maul, Vind.
Birgit works as a diabetes nurse at Herning Hospital. Jens is trained in the timber trade and works as a salesman at the sawmill Nørlund-Viskum Træ. Birgit and Jens Jacob live in Herning.

Birgit and Jens lost their firstborn, a pair of twins born 5 August 1974. The little boy died at birth. The little girl was baptised at home, Mette Høstmark Maul. She died the following day, 6 August 1974. 2 remaining children:

5.1.2 Michael Sørensen

Born 20 May 1927 in Sønder Omme. Died 7 September 2013. Married 28 December 1957 in Lunde Church Martha Petra Mortensen, born 17 October 1927, the daughter of Agnes Marie and Kristen Mortensen, Nørre Lydum. Martha died 5 September 2018.

Michael worked from 1927 with agriculture, interrupted only by a stay at Danebod folk high school. In 1954 he bought a rural property in Hekkenfeldt in Lydum, and later two neighbouring properties were bought as well, so that the land was added to the farm while the buildings of the neighbouring properties were sold off.
Altogether there were 62 tønder land belonging to the property, which was run with beef cattle and grain growing.
Martha Petra and Michael are both buried in the churchyard in Nr. Nebel. 4 children:

Around New Year 2009, the daughter Inge Lise wrote the following to the website:
Mother and Father ran the farm for quite a few years. Father was out in the stable and the fields, and Mother was a helping wife; otherwise she looked after house and children to the letter. It was always nice to come home from school and Mother was at home; we never came home to an empty house.
In 1980 Father sold the cows and kept young cattle. Father continued to cultivate the land and sold the grain as seed corn. Alongside this he became gravedigger and church servant at Lydum Church.
After some years he sold the young cattle and went into politics, where he sat for two terms in Blåbjerg Municipality in the committee for Venstre.
In 1992 they sold the farm in Hekkenfeldt, Lydum, and moved to Vadgårdsvej in Nr. Nebel, in a lovely residential neighbourhood with a good large garden and pleasant neighbours. Father and Mother have always taken great pride in having a neat and respectable house with garden.
In 1994 Father retired. Mother and Father's occupation now became a new and exciting hobby, namely tournament croquet, and over the years billiards and a card club also came into the picture.
Father was diagnosed with a very rare connective-tissue disease in the first years after he retired, where one of the side effects of the medicine is, among other things, that he quickly becomes short of breath. In later years he has had difficulty managing the garden and the house, so they decided to sell the house in Vadgårdsvej. Instead they bought a cooperative dwelling on the outskirts of the town in Nr. Nebel.
Father has always had "green fingers"; he enjoys sowing, planting and harvesting. This has run through his whole life: first farmer, churchyard gravedigger, and now it is the garden's turn and Mother's windowsills. We children also enjoy his flowers, for if they spread too much in the garden, we get the offshoots. The house and garden are still Alpha and Omega for Father and Mother. It must look nice, outside as well as inside.
In 2007 Mother and Father had their golden wedding anniversary, when we gathered friends, acquaintances and family for a festive day.

After the marriage Marianne has Hansen as her surname. Marianne is trained as an office assistant and Poul is an electrician. The family lives in Troldhede. 3 children:

Randi is a trained social educator and works as such, and Søren Kristian runs an independent carpentry firm.

5.1.2.3 Anne Marie Sørensen born 27 December 1962. Married 7 July 1995 Per Rasmussen, born 2 April 1961, the son of Kristine and Kaj Viggo Rasmussen, Lydum. Anne Marie's full name after the marriage is Anne Marie Rasmussen.
Anne Marie is a shop assistant at a butcher's and Per is an electrician. The family lives in Lydum in Varde Municipality. 2 children:

5.1.2.4.1 Hans Christian Aarøe Pedersen born 9 March 1995. Hans Christian was trained as a sales assistant on 1 August 2019. He received a trade-test prize for his assignment, which was presented to him at Børsen on 1 October 2019. He lives in his own apartment in Haderslev.

Jens Kristian was born 12 May 1902 in Vorgod, died 24 December 1902 in Vorgod. Jens Kristian was buried in the cemetery in Vorgod.

5.3 Else Kirstine Madsen

Else Kirstine born 14 April 1903 in Vorgod. Died 19 February 1993, married 23 October 1927 in Sdr. Omme Church Niels Christian Jensen, Påbølgård, Hoven, born 23 February 1882, the son of Ellen Marie and Søren Jensen, Sdr. Felding. Niels Kristen died 4 December 1982. Niels Christian was the widower of Olga Cathrine Marie Sørensen, born 19 January 1886 in Hoven. Olga died 26 November 1921 in Hoven. She was buried in the cemetery in Hoven.

Else and Niels Christian moved to Grønbjerg, where they lived until they later moved to a farm in Hedehusene near Ølgod. In 1946 they sold the farm and bought a smaller property in List near Ølgod. They lived there until 1964, when they moved to the town of Ølgod. Else and Niels Christian were both buried in the cemetery in Ølgod. 3 children:

5.4 ANNA MARIE MADSEN

Anna Marie was born 17 March 1907 in Vorgod, died 11 November 1999 in Brande. Married 2 February 1934 in Give Church Antonius Sørensen Jensen, born 25 March 1898, son of Karen and Theodor Jensen, Store Horslunde near Give. Antonius died 19 May 1988 in Brande.

5.4.1 Tage Mikael Jensen

Born 30 July 1934 in Store Vorslunde, Give, married 18 July 1963 Karen Lerche Jensen, born 20 February 1940, daughter of Anna Lerche and Aksel Jensen, Hald near Randers.
Tage was trained in agriculture including at Borris Agricultural School. In 1964 they bought the farm at Præstegårdsvej 4, Blåhøj, with 23 ha. Buildings were from 1938. In 1970 they extended the farmhouse and later modernised cowshed, pigsty and machinery house, mostly by self-building. The farm runs dairy cows, calves and pigs. Land expanded to 74 ha arable and 4 ha meadow/wood.
In 1996 son Bjarne took over. Karen and Tage moved to Blåhøj Kirkevej 45. Tage worked with Bjarne. Karen worked in childcare until retirement. 2 children:
5.4.1.1 Annegrethe Lerche Jensen born 11 March 1965. Married 18 November 1995 Michael Holm, born 1 October 1964, son of Bente and Kaj Holm, Grindsted. Annegrethe is a nurse at Give Hospital. Michael works at Billund Airport. In 1993 they bought Ravlundvej 20 in Filskov (40 ha beef cattle).

5.4.3 Bodil Agnethe Jensen

Bodil was born 24 March 1938, married 18 August 1962 Henning Emil Pedersen born 2 August 1939. Later divorced. Bodil attended Rønshoved Folk High School and then worked in domestic service. From 1967 she was a substitute teacher in Helle municipality and taught evening classes. From 1976–79 she trained in needlework and crafts at Esbjerg teacher training college. She then worked for 8 years as an untrained occupational instructor. In 1987–88 Bodil completed further training. She took early retirement in 1999 and lives in Fredericia. 2 children:

5.4.5 Ove Sigfred Jensen

Ove was born 11 January 1950, died 20 January 2007. Married 11 August 1973 Anna Rørby Pedersen born 29 June, 1951, daughter of Ester Rørby and Kristian Evald Pedersen, Flø.
After 7th class Ove worked in agriculture in the Brande area. He was a pupil at Vesterlund youth school, completed his military service in Fredericia in 1971 and attended Hammerum agricultural school in the period 1971–72. In October 1972 he took over the parental home of 19 hectares from his parents. He leased neighbouring land so that 55 hectares were farmed.
Anna worked in a radio and music shop in Herning, but after the marriage, on the farm and as a substitute church caretaker in Vorslunde Church from 2002. The 19 hectares were leased out from January 2007.
In November 2012 Anna sold the property in Vorslunde to her son, Jan. Ove was buried in the cemetery in Vorslunde. 3 children:
5.4.5.1 Jørgen Rørby Jensen born 17 January 1976. Married 27 August 2005 Zarah Pripsøe (divorced 2013). After the marriage Jørgen dropped the surname Jensen and is now called Rørby Pripsøe. Jørgen attended Ollerup Gymnastikhøjskole. He now works at TDC Erførhein in Vejle and lives in Høgsholt near Vejle. 2 children:

After the marriage Jesper dropped Jensen so the family name is now Rørby Plauborg. Jesper was an electronics mechanic in 2000 and completed his computer engineering education in 2005. He now works as a computer engineer. Pernille trained as a nurse in 2011 and now works at Åbenrå Hospital. They live in Vester Sottrup near Sønderborg.2 children:

5.4.5.3 Jan Rørby Jensen born 30 April 1987. Lives with Diana Dahl Sørensen, born 28 November 1992, daughter of Sanne Dahl Thomsen and Johnny Anker Sørensen. Jan qualified as a carpenter in 2008. but took over the property on Skolevej in Vorslunde on 1 November 2012 from his mother. The land is leased out. Diana is trained as an animal caretaker specialising in horses.

Anna remarried on June 28, 2013 to Georg Ravnsbjerg Madsen, born on June 21, 1947 son of Marie Kirstine Madsen and Viggo Georg Madsen. Anna and Georg live in Brande.

5.5 IDA MARIE MADSEN

Ida was born March 29, 1909 in Vorgod, died April 9, 1995. Married May 5, 1932 in Sdr. Omme Church Jens Kristian Olesen, born March 27, 1911 son of Marie Karoline Olesen, Sdr. Omme. Jens Kristian died October 26, 1992.
Ida Marie worked in the countryside from 1922 until her marriage. She and Jens then took over 'Lille Kjærgaar' from Ida's sister, Mette. In 1936 they sold the farm and moved to Sdr. Felding. Here Jens worked in a few different ways - he drove a bus for 23 years, among other things. Ida Marie and Jens Kristian were both buried in the cemetery in Sdr. Felding. 4 children:

After finishing his military service, father married mother in 1932. He was only 21 and mother 23 years old. Father had an inheritance from his parents, who had died when he was a child. With that money, father and mother bought Lille Kærgård from Most Mette.
Frede and Gerda were born at Lille Kærgård, but before them, mother gave birth to twins who died shortly after birth. They were baptized Frede and Michael.
These were hard times for agriculture, and many went bankrupt. Father had a hard time saying no when someone asked him for help. He guaranteed for some who went bankrupt, and this and the bad times meant that father and mother had to sell the farm. Father probably had no great desire for farming either; he would rather be a blacksmith or drive a car.
They then moved to Sdr. Felding, where they bought a property in the middle of town with a bakery and shop on the ground floor and an apartment upstairs, where they lived. Father bought a car to drive a taxi, but times were so bad that he actually made no profit. Often they had no money at all, and mother said that she once asked the grocer who lived across the street for credit. They did not give credit to newcomers, was the answer she got.
They sold the property and the taxi, and moved into an apartment. Here Else and Inga were born. Father then got a job, like so many others at that time, in the brown coal mines. It was hard work, and the hourly wage was low, but it put food on the table for a family with father, mother and four children.
The coal mines are located north of Troldhede, about 12 km from Sdr. Felding. That's Dad on the left in the picture. Once an excavator had slid down a slope, and they worked for half a day in the cold water before they managed to pull it up. Dad and another worker were so frozen that they cycled home to get dry clothes, and when it was time for work, they agreed to stay home. When the weekly wage was paid, they were paid, even though they had helped save the owner from a big loss.
Mom was very economical. She had many different jobs and thus helped to keep everything running. For example, she baked waffles at the bakery, served at the hotel and chopped beets at various farms. She was very persistent and was also good at getting interesting jobs.
She was introduced to Spirella, which was the fashion of the time to help with the figure. Mom was also good at sewing and sewed all our clothes, and for a while she worked at a sewing machine. Later she sewed curtains and mended clothes for the town's manufacturing business. One fine day there was a knitting machine in the home, and she began selling yarn and knitting for people. In 1941, father and mother built a house in Sdr. Felding, where they also had a large garden. Mother took great care of the kitchen garden with vegetables, fruit and berries. The flower garden was also laid out nicely over time, and they planted lawns in tufts, a novelty Frede brought with him – he worked as a gardener at an experimental station.
In 1944, father started driving as a bus driver on the private route Sdr. Felding – Herning, a job he had until it was closed down. In 1970, he bought a taxi and a tourist bus, and mother answered the phone and kept track of the orders. Especially from his time as a bus driver, he could tell with enthusiasm about many exciting experiences, and about the incredible errands he was sent on when he came to the big city – Herning. One of father's great interests was amateur acting. Among other things, he was there when the Elve and Mosekongen were played in "Krattet".
We had a home where the doors were always open, and where young and old felt welcome. There was food and homemade bread for everyone.

My father is doing well under the circumstances, and lives in sheltered housing in Odense.
I qualified as a gardener in 1971. In 1978 I was employed as a seller of small plants for nurseries at GA Odense. Today I am Sales manager for GASA Young Plants A/S with a team of 24 employees.
Lissi and I lived in Stige, Odense N, until 1997.Then we bought my parents' house in Højby, Odense S. Lissi has three children, whom I also call mine. All are married or have boyfriends. Together we have 8 grandchildren, and when the immediate family is together, we are 21 people.

5.5.3 Else Kirstine Olesen

Else was born 22 November 1937 in Sønder Felding. Married 23 July 1960 in Sdr. Felding Church Henning Eli Lindgren Larsen, born 23 July 1930, son of Gerda Marie and Svend Aage Larsen, Fuglebjerg parish.
Else was originally educated at Hindholm Seminarium, later Hindholm Social Pedagogical Seminarium, and worked at an orphanage in Sorø. Else later trained as a Technical Assistant and worked for a number of years at a large consulting engineering company. Henning ran a 3rd generation independent master painter business in Fuglebjerg. Henning is now buried at Fuglebjerg Cemetery. 2 children:
5.5.3.1 Bo Lindgren Larsen born 9 December 1961 in Rude ved Fuglebjerg. Living since 1988 with Hanne Christa Torp, born 8 December 1954 in Viborg.
Bo attended high school in Slagelse. After completing his military service and training as a Sergeant in the Military Police, he received a cand.merc.aud. from the Copenhagen Business School (CBS). He later made a career in the financial sector. Hanne Christa graduated from Viborg Cathedral School and has since graduated from Aarhus University and has made a career at the School of Business, Aarhus University and the University of Copenhagen. Hanne Christa and Bo live in Frederiksberg in Copenhagen. 1 child:

Ann graduated as a Social and Health Assistant in 2000 and has since celebrated her 25th anniversary as an employee at Bostedet Karen Marie. Keld is a farmer from Lyngby Agricultural School in 1985 and an accounting technician from Vejlby Agricultural School in 1991 and a sewer master in 1996. The family lives in Tornemark, in southwest Zealand. 2 children:

Ole attended high school in Struer and graduated with a degree in cand.scient.adm. in 1993 from Aalborg University, and now works at Aalborg University as a secretariat manager at the Department of Social Development and Planning. Bitten attended high school in Vejen and qualified as a teacher at Aalborg Seminarium in 1994. She works as a department manager at Tofthøjskolen in Storvorde. Bitten and Ole live in Aalborg. 2 children:

5.6 JENNY ANINA MADSEN

Jenny was born 3 March 1910 in Vorgod. Died 23 December 2008. Married 26 May 1935 in Sdr. Omme Church Aage Marinus Pedersen, born 10 June 1909, son of Hanne and Peder Pedersen (Klokmose), Sdr. Omme. Aage died 23 November 1988 in Sdr. Omme.
From 1924 until her marriage, Jenny worked as a housekeeper in various places. In 1935, they bought a farm in Engebæk, which they ran together until 1979, when they bought a house in Sdr. Omme. Jenny and Aage were both buried in the cemetery in Sdr. Omme. They had 3 children:

About life at home and memories of their parents, Lilly and Gunnar wrote on 27 May 2006:
In April 1935, mother and father bought a property in Engebæk, which they ran until May 1979. They built a new farmhouse in 1951, and in 1967 they built a new barn.
The year 1955 was a turning point for us children. Father got his driver's licence and we got a car, a brand new car, which meant we could go out driving. We went on many Sunday trips.
Dinner was prepared in the morning after mother had milked. The car was packed with a primus stove, camping table and folding chairs. When it was midday, and we had found a good place by the forest, or perhaps by the beach, the table was set for Sunday dinner, complete with tablecloth. The food was finished on the primus stove, and dinner was served.
We had to be home again in the evening to feed and milk, but those were good experiences, which I remember clearly.
Father was away from home a great deal, as he was involved in committee work. For many years he was on the board of the slaughterhouse (Midtjylland), and in connection with that he travelled both to Italy and England, which was quite unusual at the time.
For many years he was treasurer of Blåhøj Dairy. One afternoon each month he sat at Blåhøj Dairy and paid out milk money to the suppliers.
It regularly happened that mother was home alone and looked after the farm together with the children. She was on the school committee and for a time also on the board of the household association, so they both tried to exert influence in the local community.
In 1979 they bought a house in Sønder Omme, where father died in 1988. He was disabled by Parkinson's disease, and for approximately the last one and a half years of his life, he lived at De gamles Hjem in Sønder Omme.
Mother then lived alone in the house until 1996, when she moved to a nursing home. She had dementia and could no longer manage.

5.6.1 Gunnar Engberg Pedersen

Gunnar was born 15 March 1937 in Engebæk, Sdr. Omme. Married 26 May 1962 Else Møller, born 19 February 1940, daughter of Anna Kirstine Margrethe and Elias Sørensen Møller, Billund. Else died 15 January 2019.
Gunnar attended junior high school in Rinkenæs and later Hammerum Agricultural School. In 1962 they bought “Kærhavegård” in Kærbæk near Ansager, which they operated with fattening cattle and sows. In 1985 Gunnar obtained employment at DANISCO in Grindsted as an insulator and Else obtained employment at the nursing home. In 1997 they sold “Kærhavegård” and moved into their own house in Grindsted. Both took early retirement in 2000. 4 children:
5.6.1.1 Leif Engberg Pedersen born 20 January 1968. Married 8 April 2000 Lynette Dawn Martin, born 8 November 1970, daughter of Heather and Roly Martin, New Zealand.
Leif attended 9th and 10th class at Lunderskov Efterskole. He was then trained as an electrician, took the installer’s exam and got work in Egtved. In 1998 he went as the only Dane to an international folk high school in New Zealand, where he met Lynette, who was employed to take care of the school’s garden. Leif is now employed as caretaker at the folk high school. 3 children:

Lisbeth attended 9th and 10th class at Lunderskov Efterskole. She was then trained as an electrician in Agerbæk and took the installer’s exam in Esbjerg. Henrik attended Sydvestjysk Efterskole in 10th class. He then worked at Agerbæk machine station until in 1993 they took over the parents’ trout fishery. At the same time they bought a neighbouring property, which they ran with free-range pigs until they stopped production in 2006. Both now work at Columbus Aqua in Grindsted, a company that produces water and manure systems for mink. The family lives in Glejbjerg. 3 children:
