1.1 CATHERINE (KITTY) MARY McEVOY

Born 1844 at Dry Creek, attended Ardtornish School, died 19-8-1928 aged 82 years, buried Jamestown Cemetery married James Francis Quinn born c.1842 in County Galway, Ireland, died 9-6-1929 Pt Pirie aged 87 yrs, buried Jamestown, on 20-2-1865 at St Patrick's Church, Adelaide.
Jim Quinn is said to have arrived in South Australia aboard the Nugget in 1854 together with his three brothers and four sisters, according to his newspaper obituary in The 'Adelaide Chronicle,' June 20, 1929, page 53. No Quinns are listed on that passenger list, however. On the Nugget which arrived in 1858, however, there were 6 Quinns: James 17, Thomas 24, John 26 and Daniel 26, all single. They were labourers. Bridget Quinn 19, and Mary Quinn 21, were both servants. All except Daniel (County Clare) were from Galway, according to the passenger list.
There is a belief in the family that Jim Quinn was related to Ned Kelly's mother, a Quinn, and that Ned Kelly spent some time on the run from the police in a hut near Jamestown.
Jim met Catherine at Pt Gawler. Later they moved to Mannanarie and to Booleroo Centre and then to Hammond where they farmed successfully until a big drought in 1897. They moved to Wirrabarra and finally to Jamestown. This does not correspond with the information listed in the obituary below, but obituary information was often wrong!

MRS. QUINN
Mrs. Quinn, wife of Mr. James Quinn, died on Sunday, August 26, aged 85 years. Mrs. Quinn claimed to be one of the oldest living residents born in this state. She was born at Dry Creek in 1843, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. McAvoy. Her father arrived from Ireland in 1839, and her mother in 1840, by the sailing ship Mary Dagdale. Mrs. Quinn's parents were employed by Mr. Angus McLean, and were married in Adelaide in 1842. After their marriage they secured a small holding about a mile and a half from where the stockyards now stand, where Mrs. Quinn was born. When of school-going age she attended Artormish school. When she was 13 years of age her parents left Dry Creek and went to live near Gawler River, afterwards called Lewiston, where she finished her education she married Mr. James Quinn in 1864, and lived in the Port Gawler district for a few years, and then went to the Light River. Later they moved to Mannanarie, but, having only a small holding, they secured land in the hundred of Booleroo. This land was heavy and difficult to work with limited capital, so they moved to Hammond and farmed with success for a few years until the big drought from 1892 to 1896 forced them to leave. They went to Belalie, then to Wirrabara, and finally settled in Jamestown. There was a family of four daughters and five sons. A daughter (Mrs. Gregory) and a son (Mr. John Quinn) died. The husband (Mr. James Quinn) is still alive and has reached the age of 89 years. The surviving family are Mrs. W. Case, Peterborough; Mrs. H. McQuillan, Jamestown; Mrs. L. R. Phillis, Port Pirie; Messrs. Thomas Quinn, Malpas; James Quinn, Oodnadatta; Patrick Quinn, Yongala; and Robert Quinn, Wirrabara. There are 32 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mrs Quinn, wife of Mr. James Quinn, who died recently at Jamestown, at the age of 85, was one of the oldest native born South Australians. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis McAvoy, who migrated from Ireland, and were married in Adelaide in 1842. Mrs Quinn was married in 1864.   • 1.1.2.2 Vernon Cameron Gregory born 11-3-1896 Pinda, was a soldier who died in the first world war. He was 19 when he embarked with his brother Eugene 18, below, on the 26th August, 1915 aboard "RMS Morea." He was a member of the Imperial Camel Corps and was killed in action on 19-4-1917 in Palestine aged 22 years. Vernon's service number was 1181 and Eugene's was 1182. Vernon Cameron Gregory's name is located at panel 10 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial and on the Jerusalem Memorial in the Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.

    The picture shows Vernon on the left and Eugene on the right. The Australian War Memorial says that it was a "Studio portrait of brothers 1181 Trooper (Tpr) Vernon Cameron Gregory (left) and 1182 Tpr Eugene Harry Gregory (right), 3rd Light Horse Regiment, of Morchard, SA. Labourers before enlisting together in January 1915, Vernon and Eugene Gregory left Australia for Egypt with the 8th Reinforcements in August 1915. Vernon Gregory was transferred to the Imperial Camel Corps (ICC) in November 1916, and was killed in action during the Second Battle of Gaza on 19 April 1917, age 22. Eugene Gregory returned to Australia in June 1919. The portrait of the Gregory brothers appeared in the South Australian newspaper "The Chronicle" on 31 January 1917, page 28."

    Actually the photo appeared 13th Jan, 1917 on a page of photos (with thanks to Richard Quinn for the correction). The picture is only one of three of the family, and also shows the father, George William Gregory of Morchard and his 3 soldier sons including Pte Richard Blair Gregory who embarked on the Mooltan on 24-8-1916, all under the title, SERVING KING AND COUNTRY.

    ORROROO. July 15. At the Morchard institute last night a farewell social was tendered to Privates Vernon and Eugene Gregory, two members of the A.I.F. third Light Horse Reinforcements who are proceeding to the front. There was a large attendance, and Mr. W. Toop (chairman of the district council) presided. Both the guests, as well as Uthe other members of the family, are greatly respected and eulogistic remarks were made by the speakers, who included the chairman, Messrs. J. Scriven, Lieutenant Toop, E. A. Wickins, G. Rafferty, E. J. Kitto, and O. Longbotham. Mr. H. Kitto presented each of the departing soldiers with a wristlet watch on behalf of the residents. Songs were contributed by Miss Roberts, Mr. Longbotham, and items were rendered by the school children, under the conductorship of Mr. Roberts. A supper and dance followed.   This notice, just found June, 2024, mentions a son, possibly Gordon John Woolley born 5-3-1916, also listed separately as Gordon John McQuillan, mother Milson Woolley, father not given. Also listed in births is Charles Gordon Woolley born 5-3-1916 to the same mother. Is it the same child or were they twins? A Gordon John McQuillan died 25-9-2005 aged 89 years. He had married Molly (Mary Eileen) McMahon at St Theresa's Catholic Church, Col Light Gardens on 18-4-1944. She died 7-9-1974. Not sure if there were any children. They would not be McEvoy descendants if Harry was the father of Gordon, but it would be interesting to know. In the Walsh Family tree on Ancestry, it says Charles Gordon Woolley, also known as Gordon John McQuillan is the son of Gordon Bertram Nixon, so the plot thickens.

  James and Catherine Quinn did not register the birth of any of their children apart from the last one, Robert Quinn. I do not know where the birth dates I have for the twins, John and Thomas, came from originally, but it would seem that their birth date may have been 1877, not 1872, which means that the numbering system is incorrect for all the other families. Thomas is listed as aged 26 on marriage which would make his birth year 1873, though if he was 72 when he died the birth year would be 1877. It seems more likely the marriage age is correct being closer to the time. Since the two brothers have no living descendants, I may leave the numbering system as is for now. (26/10/2011)

    The death occurred at the Peterborough Hospital last Thursday of Mr. Patrick Dennis Quinn, of Yongala, at the age of 69 years. He has left a widow, one son, Les, and two daughters, Melva and Valda to whom we express our sympathy.

    Mr. Patrick Dennis Quinn who died in Peterborough Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, was born at Booleroo Centre on May 8th. 1879, and married Miss E. J. Case of Hammond, in 1913. They went to reside at Belalie North, where Mr. Quinn was agent for the SA Farmers' Union. About 21 years ago, he came to Yongala where he represented the same organization. His wife survives, and there are two daughters and one son, viz., Mesdames D. Kavanagh (Mt. Burr), S. Duggan (Yongala) and Mr. L. J. Quinn Yongala.
