ISLE OF MAN

THOMAS KERMODE christened 17 Dec 1818 in Kirk German, Isle of Man; died 13 Aug 1877 aged 59 yrs in Peel, Isle of Man; buried 16 Aug 1877 in German parish, Isle of Man. Married Eliza Cowley, daughter of Thomas Cowley and Catharine Teare, born 20 May 1820 in Ballaugh, Isle of Man, died 16 Jan 1903 in Peel, Isle of Man on 14 Jan 1841 in Ballaugh, Isle of Man. They had 11 male children of whom Arthur Nathaniel was the 6th.


ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

ARTHUR NATHANIEL KERMODE, (pictured at left aged in his twenties) christened 30 July 1852 in Kirk German, Peel, Isle of Man emigrated to SA in 1873 on ship 'Great Britain." He died 10 Jun 1918 Norton Summit, South Australia. He was buried on 12 Jun 1918 in Norton Summit Cemetery, South Australia.

Arthur, 26, married Jane Smith, 23, (at right, in middle age) on 23 Nov 1878 in Chalmers Manse, North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia. She was the daughter of William Smith and Jane Bauchop, who emigrated from Scotland with children Alexander and Jane, aboard ship "Melbourne" arriving November 1858. Jane was born 25-1-1854 in Co. Balfrone, Scotland. For many years she was a nurse, at Norton Summit. My mother remembers that she always dyed her hair red. She died on 10 Apr 1936 at Third Creek, Norton Summit, South Australia, Australia, buried Norton Summit.

They had 5 children, 4 sons and 1 daughter, the youngest. Sadly, Gladys Mabel Kermode died aged 7 of diphtheria. Three sons survived to adulthood and only one of these, Thomas, had children, also 5 in number..

1.Thomas Kermode born 29 Mar 1879. He died on 20 Jun 1948.

2. Arthur Kermode born 27 May 1881 in Adelaide, South Australia. He died on 21 Mar 1882.

3. Arthur (Art) Nathaniel Kermode born 5 Jan 1883 in Adelaide, South Australia. He died on 30 Jun 1954 in Adelaide, South Australia, buried West Tce, in AIF area. Arthur, 45, married Clara Amanda Alwine Stanitzky nee Binder, 34, divorced, on 9-8-1928 at Salvation Army Office, Adelaide. Clara was born on 1 Apr 1894. She died aged 75, 24-8-1969 and is buried at Centennial Park, Luth. Path 8, 149A

4. James (Jim) Kermode, born 26 Feb 1888 in Adelaide, South Australia. He died on 27 May 1970 in Magill, Adelaide, South Australia. James, 33, married Sarah Annie Lloyd nee Hewton, widow, 55, on 28 Jan 1922 at St Matthew's Church, Kensington, South Australia. Sarah was born about 1867 in Adelaide, South Australia. She died on 21 Jun 1959 in Magill, Adelaide, South Australia.

5. Gladys Mabel Kermode was born on 10 Sep 1893 in Adelaide, South Australia. She died on 1 Jun 1901 in Norton Summit, South Australia, buried Norton Summit with parents.

THOMAS KERMODE was born on 29 Mar 1879 in Field Street, Adelaide, South Australia. He died on 20 Jun 1948 in 9 Grenfell Street, Kent Town, South Australia. b.29-3-1879 - d.20-6-1948 aged 69

Thomas married (1) Emily May Mobbs (pictured left 1916), daughter of Alfred Mobbs and Harriet Elizabeth Powell, on 22 Aug 1908 in Methodist Manse, Morphett Street, Adelaide, South Australia.

Emily was born on 25 Mar 1888 in Murray Bridge, South Australia. She died on 16 Dec 1927 in Norton Summit, South Australia. She was buried in Murray Bridge Cemetery, South Australia. b.25-3-1888 - d.16-12-1927 aged 39. They had the following 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons:

1. Stephanie Naude Kermode (m.Leopold Harold Rowley) was born on 18 Jan 1910 in Loxton, South Australia. She died in 25-6-1984 at RAH, Adelaide, South Australia.
b.18-1-1910 - d.25-6-1984 aged 74

2. Ormonde Bracton (aka Lut by family and Jim by in-laws) Kermode was born on 6 Aug 1911. He died on 26 Sep 1998.
b.6-8-1911 - d.25-6-1998 aged 86

3. Corrinne Lisle Kermode was born on 9 Jan 1914. She died on 16 Nov 1981.
b.9-1-1914 - d.16-11-1981 aged 67

4. Diana Thalia Kermode was born on 21 Feb 1920. She died on 4 Jan 1997.
b.21-2-1920 - d.4-1-1997 aged 76

5. Karman Lancaster Peel "Bill" Kermode was born on 4 Jun 1923 in South Australia. He died on 8 Feb 1943 at sea off Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, when a merchant marine BHP cadet aboard ship, 'SS Iron Knight.' It was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, sinking at once.
b.4-6-1923 - d.8-2-1943 aged 19.

Thomas Kermode, 49, widower, married (2) Alma Louisa Gigney, 43, daughter of Edward John Gigney and Emma Louisa West on 29 Sep 1928 in St George's Church, Norwood, South Australia.
Alma was born 23 Jun, 1885 in Magill, South Australia. She died on 17 Mar 1966 in Campbelltown, South Australia and was buried in Centennial Park, Pasadena, South Australia.

Thomas and Alma, pictured at right at their home at 9 Grenfell St, Kent Town in later life, adopted the following child:

6. Thomas Junior Kermode, born 19 Jun 1931. He died on 5 Jun 1990 in Adelaide, South Australia.
b.19-6-1931 - d.5-6-1990 aged 58 years


Alma Gigney lived at 2 Pepper Street, Magill with her parents, 5 sisters and 1 brother shown in the photo at left. On the other side of the road nearby, at 7 Pepper St, lived Jim and Annie Kermode. He was Thomas Kermode's brother.
