Mr. William A. McEvoy, who died at the Burra Hospital, on July 20, was the actual discoverer of the Mannahill gold fields, which he
found in 1885. He was associated with Dr. Basedow on the North West Expedition, in 1903, as prospector. The expedition explored the
extreme north-western corner of this State, and the south-western extremity of the Territory, an area which embraces the Musgrave, Mann,
Tomkinson, Everard, and Petermann ranges, as well as ranges lying across the Western Australian boundary.

A RIDER INJURED. BURRA, September 21. Mr. William Francis McEvoy, of North Booborowie, was out mustering sheep on Wednesday when a horse he was riding fell and rolled on him, causing one of his ankles to be broken. Dr. Ashton went out and set the limb, after which the sufferer was conveyed to the Jamestown Hospital.

A newspaper article gives us some rather sad information about Bernard McEvoy aged 20 years:
HAMMOND, November 17....Another young man, Bernard P. McEvoy, met with a painful accident on the same run (Murnpeowie). Whilst driving a team of horses he struck himself in the eye with the whip, cutting the eye so severely that he was blinded. It was six days before he reached Dr. Shuter, of Port Augusta, who took the eye out.

I go to St. Joseph's School. I have two brothers, whose names are Jack and Anthony. Jack is seven and Anthony is three. The Sisters at Balaklava are very kind. We have a very nice little church. The sanctuary is prettily decorated with statues. We have eight altar boys, and I am pleased to say I am one of them. I look forward for my morning to serve Mass. I enclose twopence for a Membership Card and threepence for the little orphans.

Southern Cross, Friday 16 October 1925, page 15A Talented Pupil. Edward McMahon, a son of Mr, and Mrs. J. McMahon, of Balaklava, was successful at the recent Qualifying Certificate examination in securing a Qualifying Exhibition with the per centage of 644 marks. In addition to this, during the same year, he succeeded in gaining a pass with honours in three practical music examinations and one theory. This is undoubtedly a very creditable achievement for a boy of 13 years of age. This brilliant young pupil has received all his education at St. Joseph's School, Balaklava, and will continue his higher studies at the Christian Brothers' College, "Rostrevor," Magill.

They raised her 7 children, Eric Joseph, John Joseph, Mary (Molly) Catherine, Alice Petronella born 13-7-1913, John Joseph (2), Desmond Patrick, Grace Eugenie Mahoney and one daughter of their own.
